The Bommarito Automotive Group 500 race was first contested as a CART series from 1997 to 2000. It was held as an IndyCar Series event from 2001 to 2003. After a long time, the series returned as part of the unified IndyCar Series in 2017.

The race was decreased to 250 miles (200 laps) in July 2020 due to the coronavirus impact. The event currently consists of two identical 200-lap races in the afternoon. The advertisers have declared that they have signed an agreement with IndyCar for another 5 years for the 2021 event.
